When I studied Gemology at the IGE in Madrid in 2001, at the same time as he was finishing his Business Studies at the University of Murcia, I learned many concepts that experience and day-to-day life do not give you, and that give you a broader and more technical vision of what you love and live with on a daily basis.
The Diploma in Gemmology was two years, and my objective was to focus on the gem par excellence and the one I "live with" most in my day-to-day life, the diamond. But in order to go deeper into it, I had to follow the logical and ascending path from the beginning. Gemmology gave me wonderful knowledge, which helped me a lot in my work.and above all that they made me understand more and better the treatment of the different gems in the jewellery workshop, in their manipulation, in the possible works of transformations to customer jewellery, and above all to complete the training of oneself that is always to be done...
Gemmology is not only diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire. It is a very broad field that goes beyond that, that has an origin, and a miraculous variety to its credit. Knowing the vast majority of gems and their properties, you can better understand the trends set by some jewellers in the world, the colours in fashion, you can better understand the colours and types that you must use to satisfy a client, and a host of other issues.
These knowledge of precious and ornamental stones has been known to man for at least 10,000 years.. And it might surprise many of you to learn that the first stones used for ornamental purposes were the amethyst, rock crystal, serpentine, emerald and turquoise.
The origin and formation of gemstones, its crystallographic system, their properties such as hardness, fracture, density, density, weight, colour, size, refraction, dispersion, transparency, brightness, pleochroism, optical effects, inclusions,... as well as their deposits and extractions, as well as their manipulation of carving, drilling and polishing. etc... provides you with valuable information to better understand their different uses applied to the world of jewellery, and perhaps give each of these gems the importance and status they deserve.
I started out very obsessed with improving my knowledge of diamonds, but I ended up loving and appreciating them very much. some gems that fascinated me such as : garnets in green (Tsavorite), tourmaline for its beauty of colours, the agate family, opals and jades among others.
In the blog and in the near future, I will try to comment in some occasions, more specific aspects about some gems, and their application and photograph of some jewellery elaborated by us.
This is undoubtedly an exciting world of jewellery to understand and appreciate the value of a piece of jewellery even more.
