Although its origin is difficult to place in an exact point in space and time, experts claim that, at the very least, the first Carnival dates back to more than 5,000 years ago! It could have been during the Roman Empire with the Saturnales, or in Ancient Greece with its festivities in honour of Dionysus.
Historians explain that the traditional colours attributed to the Carnival reflect a wise why: the purple (justice), gold (power) and green (faith).
