How many times have we been told how essential it is to have a good understanding of our originsto learn and appreciate them. Even when we already know and admire the final result, deconstructing it and imagining its provenance in our minds helps us to give a much more special value to the jewel we hold in our hands.
If life gives you lemons... you have lemonade! And we, with the gold, will make jewellery.
How is gold jewellery made?
At Blasco Joyero we make jewellery in yellow gold and white gold, both 18K. As a note of interest, you should know that gold jewellery is made of pure gold (24 K).It is mixed or aligned with other metals in order to reduce or modify its hardness and purity and thus to work it more efficiently.
Therefore, 18 K gold must contain at least 75% of pure gold (24 K) combined with zinc and copper (a maximum of 25%) to achieve this yellow or pink shade. For the same reason, white gold is obtained by alloying it with silver and palladium.
We could make a small distinction between jewellery exclusive y personalisedBoth techniques, industrial or automated as well as handmade, are used to create truly unique pieces. Thus, a piece of gold can be made using three different methods:
- Direct metal-stone work: This is the main technique we use here, at Blasco Jeweller. It happens to be the most ancient, arduous and artisanal of all the techniques. The process begins with the melting of the material and, once liquid, we pour it into a mould where it is heated and left to cool to be worked later from the ingot or rail obtained. We can repeat the procedure as many times as necessary. By pressing, hammering and bending, we give the gold the desired shape to create the structure or skeleton of the jewellery. Then, we open small holes or mouths where the gemstone of our choice will go. Finally, we solder the different parts of the piece and set the gemstone.
- Moulded with wax: is the most common today. It consists of melting the metal and shaping it with a mould. However, in contrast to the first method, in this case we melt wax - instead of the metal - with which we create the moulds for the jewellery. The metal is then melted into the mould created by the wax and shaped into the desired form.
- By means of a 3D design made by computer. It is the most modern of all techniques. The process begins with the design of a render or virtual image of our jewellery. A previous step that helps us to carry out a better analysis and study of our design, being able to make several changes instantly before starting to make the piece. Once we have the finished virtual image, we make a wax prototype and repeat the same sequence of steps as in the previous technique, starting from that prototype.
From Blasco Joyero we encourage you to carry out a healing and pampering exercise for your mind. Stop for a second, stop everything you are doing, abandon the frenetic rhythm of routine and be aware of yourself, of the here and now. Look back and appreciate your first steps on your fortunate journey and see how far you have come!
We all have an origin, a primitive root. To put it more poetically, we start out as a diamond in the rough or a generous little group of gold nuggets about to be melted down to make a marvellous jewel. Although they say that 'all that glitters is not gold'.... yes indeed!
Come and visit us at C/Barítono Marcos Redondo, 3 (Murcia), we will be delighted to welcome you and advise you on everything you need!
