The acronym 'GIA' refers to the Gemological Institute of Americaa non-profit organisation dedicated to research, training and standardisation in gemmology. Founded in 1931 by Roger Shipleyhas one of the most reputable gemmological laboratories in the world, with the world's top gem experts and graduates working on its lines.
GIA is responsible for standardising the diamond grading system and is the originator of the famous 4 C: colour, carat, clarity and cut. We explained these 4 criteria for evaluating the quality of a diamond in detail in the previous post. "The more carats... the better the ring?
- Why is the GIA quality certificate so important?
Buying a diamond can be a major investment, so for a better guarantee of quality, the GIA issues a certificate showing and detailing its classification based on the different quality parameters (4 C's).
As a demanding and comprehensive assessment, this certificate enjoys the highest reputation in the world.
There are two types of certificates:
- The dossier GIA Diamondmore concise.
- The GIA Diamond Grading ReportThe most detailed and essential information about the stone.
- What is detailed in this certificate?
Describe the exact measurements of the stone (including the percentage of the surface), its total depth, whether there is fluorescence or whether it contains unique inclusions, for example.
This document includes:
- Size and shape.
- Precise diamond dimensions.
- Their classification on the purity scale.
- Their classification on the colour scale.
- Carat weight.
- Graphical representation of each of the diamond's characteristics.
In addition to the physical document, GIA diamonds are engraved in their fillet (transition from the crown to the cylinder head) the certificate number that has been allocated to it. In other words, as if it were your "DNI".
